On today’s date, many wake up and dread looking at the calendar. Some are riddled by fear while others look at it as another day. Just how did this hullabaloo start over this legendary day? Although there are a few different theories about how the fear of Friday the 13^th came about, one of the more popular beliefs is that it derived from The Last Supper with Jesus and the apostles. The Meaning of the UV Index Scale

Ever wonder what the UV Index means?

For many years, scientists have been studying the sun and its effects on our habitat. In order to measure the sun’s rays, a scale called the UV or ultraviolet Index scale was created. This handy little chart is used frequently by meteorologists and lets us know when exposure to the sun is dangerous. Today, Sunglasses Avant Garde will give you a breakdown of this colorful safeguard.

In a nutshell, ultraviolet rays are a form of radiation emitted by the sun that can cause damage to human skill cells, if overexposure occurs. Although they are invisible to human eye, they can have a vast effect on our body.

Green: 2 or less

When looking at the UV Index scale, think of it like a sideways traffic light. If you see green, you are good to go outside. You will still get some exposure to the sun, so it is always a good idea to wear sunglasses and a light sunscreen, if you are sensitive to the sun.

Yellow: 3 to 5

A yellow block on the UV Index means there is a moderate risk of harm due to sun exposure. In other words, if you plan on being outside for a long period of time, find shade during the brightest hours of the day and take advantage of sunscreen and protective eyewear.

Fun fact: Did you know that bees can see ultraviolet rays?

Orange: 6 to 7

If you see orange on the UV Index, take precautionary measures and limit your exposure. This means the sun’s rays are strong and can cause damage quickly if skin is exposed. Definitely use a heavier sunscreen, at least an SPF 20 or above and protect your eyes. Utilizing a brimmed hat is beneficial when the UV Index is high.

Red: 8 to 10

If you see red on the UV Index, stop and think before stepping out into the light. Red is an indicator that the UV rays are very harsh. Wear your sunglasses and lather your skin with an even thicker sunscreen. SPF 35 or above is typically better. Make sure sunscreen is reapplied if excess sweating occurs and try to stay out of the sun for long periods of time.

Purple: 11 +

A purple color on the UV index means the sun’s rays are extremely dangerous to unprotected skin. Since burning can occur at a rapid rate, make sure you cover up, bring your UV-protective shades, hat and do not leave without sunscreen. On days when the UV index is so extreme, it might be best to enjoy an indoor activity.

Keep your eyes on the UV Index and help protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. Your body will thank you in the long run!

A Look Back at Eyewear Trends for 2011

Trendy things have happened in the world of eyewear in 2011

Taking a step back and doing a yearly rewind of fashion trends can most certainly be an interesting adventure. Styles sometimes change within a blink of an eye and when the sun is shining, most eyes are on or behind sunglasses. Since sunglasses have a style of their own, we have comprised a time-line of eyewear fashions throughout the seasons in 2011 for your enjoyment!

Spring and summer sunglasses

This past spring and summer were pretty similar when it came to eyewear style. During this time, retro was the way to go. Big ‘70s style frames as well as some ‘50s style cat-eye edges graced the runways and streets. As for the more urban look, smoky lenses, metallic accents and leather added spunk to aviators. Mixed-media frames were also the in-thing and mirrored or blacked out lenses made them the perfect fit for a rebellious and futuristic look. Round John Lennon style frames were spotted as well as rustic style wooden frames that gave an earthy glow. Also sleek and bold metal details added a masculine and mysterious flare to a typical pair of guy-specs.

Fall and winter eyewear

At times, style is something that one can fall back on. The styles that many were touting this past fall consisted of a rich assortment of shiny bling. Holiday Fire: A True Story

A fire and the heroic deeds of a concerned neighbor

Since the weekend is hours away, I was planning on writing a more upbeat blog; however, due to the fact this can happen to anyone, I figured I’d share a true story that could save a home or possibly even a life.

Since the weather has been becoming quite chilly, the homeowners felt that there’s nothing better than warm, relaxing fire to wrap up the evening. After the logs were in place and the fire was set, the couple went about their business.

About an hour later, a loud, hard banging noise at the door alarmed the homeowners. Bam, bam bam! “What in the world?” the lady of the house thought to herself, as she sprung up from her computer. As she scurried down the stairs, she saw that her husband was nowhere in sight. Bewildered by the situation, she decided to investigate and went outside to find her significant other. What she saw next, was a shocking sight.

Flames were shooting out of the side of her house, while her husband and neighbor were dousing the flames with a garden hose and fire extinguisher! “Holy cow,” she exclaimed as she ran back in the house to check on the fireplace. On the inside, the fire was still burning as it normally would. The only thing she noticed was that one of the logs seemed to be touching the back wall of the fireplace.

Seconds later, the flames were out, due to the handy work of the neighbor and a trusty fire extinguisher. Armed with a few pot holders and a shovel, he quickly loaded the burnt logs and fireplace grate into a wheelbarrow and dumped them out into the driveway to cool. After dousing the inside of the hot mantel with water, the fire department arrived and tore what was left to the wooden siding off the damaged area of the house.

Apparently, the fire in the fireplace heated up the blocks so much, that it cracked the cement sealant and started a fire on the outside of the house. At least that is what is understood. After the house is inspected, the couple will know for sure.

As for the lady of the house, that was me.

I wanted to share this story to make my readers more aware what can happen when you least expect it. I’ve also compiled a few fire safety tips to help keep you and your own family safe. One can never be too careful when it comes to fire.

Fire safety tips:

· Have your chimney swept and cleaned once a year

· Have heating equipment inspected once per year

· Clean all ducts including clothes dryer ducts every year

· Test some detectors once a month

· Change batteries in a smoke detector once a year

· Avoid overloading electrical outlets

· Discard holiday light strings with frayed wires, cracked sockets or loose connections

· Keep decor, curtains and furniture at least three feet from any sources of heat

· Do not leave candles burning without being watched

· Keep matches and lighters out of children’s reach

· Use clothes dryers ONLY while someone is home or awake

· Never leave the room while cooking

· Keep fire extinguishers around the house in case of emergency

· Do not purchase a dry or brittle Christmas tree

· Turn off space heaters and extinguish fireplaces while sleeping or when leaving home

· Make sure halogen lights are away from anything flammable

· Have a fire escape route and meeting place mapped out

· Do not smoke in bed or while sleepy

· Stop, drop and roll, if clothing catches fire

· Always stay low to the ground, if escaping a fire

Hopefully this situation doesn’t happen to you.

I also would like to thank my company for allowing me to share my story and most of all, a huge thank you to my neighbor for his kindness, concern, quick thinking and action. If it wasn’t for him and his son, I might not be writing this article today! I don’t think I can say thanks enough!

A holiday celebration without food just isn’t as jolly. After planning the menu for your festive feast, considering food safety while prepping and storing is imperative. Below are a few tips to help keep your holidays happy, healthy and bacteria-free.

When prepping your meals, here are a few things to keep in mind:

· Always wash hands before handling food

· Wash and sanitize all food prep surface areas

· Wash all fruits and vegetables

· When cooking, make sure most meats reach up to 165 degrees Fahrenheit

· Use separate cutting boards for meat and produce

· Do not thaw or marinate food at room temperature

· Only store fresh meats up to 2 days in the refrigerator

Tips for Surviving the Cold

What to do when the weather outside is frightful

If you have even been in chilly situation, you know it isn’t too comfortable. Extremities can freeze, frostbite can set in and even death can occur. Weather you get stranded on the road while driving, your heat and electricity goes out or your camping trip ended up being in colder temperatures than usual, here are a few tips for keeping safe from the bone-chilling elements of Mother Nature’s fury.

Be prepared for winter storms

It’s always a great idea to be prepared in every situation, even the chilly ones. Here are a few supplies to check off your preparedness list when power and heat goes out or you just happen to be camping outdoors during a harsh winter storm:

· Candles

· Waterproof matches

· Oil lantern

· Weather or space blanket

· Extra blankets

· Gloves

· Hats

· Warm socks

· Thermal clothing

· Heavy coats

· Portable grill

· Gas-powered generator

· Extra gas

· Canned and non-perishable goods

· Bottled water

· Flashlights

· Batteries

· Battery powered radio

One of the major differences in non-prescription lenses is the color of the tint. Here are a few different ways colored hues and tones can affect your view:

Red-tinted lenses

With red tinted lens, darker objects may appear more profound and vibrant. This especially goes for red objects.

Blue-tinted lenses

When looking through a blue-tinted lens, certain things may appear paler or washed out. A blue-tinted lens can also make reddish objects appear slightly violet or grey.

Green-tinted lenses

Lenses with a green tint will have a similar affect as a blue tint. Skin tones may appear lighter.

Yellow-tinted lenses

A yellow –tinted lens can intensify any sort of red and yellow pigments.

It’s never too late to protect yourself while battle for the bargains is on.

If it’s deals you’re seeking to kick off the holiday season, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the days to shop; however, along with the great bargains, comes a not-so-super twist. On days where major sales are to be expected, random acts of violence can occur. In order to protect yourself and your wallet while the bargains are at their best, keep reading for a few beneficial tips.

During an early Black Friday event on November 24, 2011, the following incident occurred: at a Walmart in Porter Ranch, Calif., one woman allegedly pepper-sprayed bystanders, in order to gain a better access to the electronic section. On November 25, 2011, a family was confronted for their belongings in the parking lot of a Walmart in San Leandro, Calif., and one family member is in critical condition after being shot.

Why bring these sullen incidents to light? The goal is to increase safety and awareness while shopping. So the next time you decide to go on a bargain hunting spree, here are a few things to keep in mind:

· Park in a well-lit, non-isolated area

· Keep all shopping bags or valuables such as GPS devices out of view or in your trunk

· Don’t wear flashy jewelry or expensive clothing while shopping in sketchy locations

· Try not to shop in sketchy locations

· Avoid caring an abundance of cash or credit cards

· Beware of suspicious-looking or shady-acting individuals

· Steer clear of loiterers

· While making purchases, hide your credit card digits as much as possible. People can snap photos and use your information.

· Shop with a friend

· Ask a security guard or store clerk to escort you to your vehicle

According to a news blog on the fbi.gov, today, US federal agents seized control of 150 websites due to selling counterfeit items.

Now that these sites selling fabricated items have been discovered, should an online shopper still be concerned? Personally, I would be. Here are a few tips to keep stay safe while shopping online:

· Look for a VeriSign logo when considering a purchase

· Become pals with PayPal. Making purchases with a PayPal account enables users to shop without entering their credit card information on a website.

· Verify questionable sites or companies at bbb.org

· Look for “https” at the beginning of a web address. The “s” stands for secure.

· Check for online customer reviews about a company

· Use a pre-paid credit card for purchases

· Do not give checking or credit card information when asked via email. These emails are considered phishing scams.

· Look for misspellings or shoddy-looking websites

· Keep an eye open for the word “replica”

· Make sure your web browser is up-to-date and online security is enabled

In any situation, it’s better to be safe than sorry and in this day and age, one can never be too careful. While keeping these precautionary measures in mind, try to enjoy your holiday shopping experience.

When I was growing up, our Thanksgiving dinner would always be the same every year: turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, salad, bread roles, potatoes, stuffing, asparagus and carrots. It never failed; it was as if my parents had the menu carved in stone. Not that having the same yearly food-ritual was a bad thing; to me, it was just a bit monotonous. Tips for a Less Stressful Holiday

The holidays are almost here; how is your stress level?

Just when you thought you have everything figured out, you realized that you forgot the gravy for your holiday feast. After spending three exhausting hours at the grocery store last night, you were certain you had everything for tomorrow’s big day; yet, gravy is on your mind as you speed toward the airport to pick up your in-laws. “Arrrgh,” you yell, as you feel your blood pressure start to rise. When are you going to have time to get an important aspect of your meal when it’s almost 9 p.m. and the stores are about to close?

Here at Sunglasses Avant Garde, we have gathered a few tips to keep your stress levels at a minimum. After trying our suggestions below, hopefully you’ll feel stress start to melt away!

· Do what Santa does: make a list and check it twice!

I don’t know about you, but I probably would be at the store every night if I didn’t make one! Don’t like wasting paper? Download a note application on your cell phone. I downloaded the ColorNote app on mine and it works like a charm!

· Take time out for yourself

Although it’s the season to do a lot for others, just think about how much more you’ll enjoy your company or holiday events when you are relaxed. Take some time to do something that you take pleasure in. Enjoyment is typically a great remedy for stress.

· Buy yourself extra time with a pre-made holiday dinner.

This suggestion my sound unappealing, but it works out really well and no one will know but you! Many grocery stores have this option in their deli department. You can get a turkey, ham stuffing, vegetable casseroles, cranberry sauce and much more in these packaged bundles. You can mix and match the options and all you have to do is heat them up when you get home. I’ve taken this route many years and have gotten plenty of compliments on a great meal! Just don’t forget to order your meal-bundle ahead of time!

· Exercise

You hear this suggestion time and time again; however it’s healthy and is great advice. Even if you do a few squats or leg lifts while watching TV, it can help eliminate stress. Try yoga or take a walk with a friend. Even the funky dance class you were considering taking counts! Exercise releases endorphins which causes the body to relax.

· Spend some time with furry friends

Did you know that pets relieve stress? They do! In fact, in Japan, people even rent pets! Pets can help improve your mood, provide unconditional love, encourage exercise and according to known studies, have shown to reduce blood pressure. Even on the worst of days, who can’t resist looking into the eyes of a puppy or kitten and smile?

· Don’t hold it in

Let out your stress by talking, writing or even tweeting about it! Even the littlest ways of letting your woes out in a verbal or written form can help stress.

Here’s another great tip: stop and take a look at something that you consider beautiful. If you are outside, view the scenery through a fabulous pair of TAG Heuer sunglasses and protect your eyes in style while enjoying the spectacle!

The History Behind Daylight Saving Time

Does one hour make that much of a difference?

The rays of sun are getting weaker and colder air is slowly trickling in. You notice the days are shortening and the once sunny drive on your way home is becoming dimmer and darker. Then, every year on that one faithful day, the clocks turn back and your ride home now pitch black. As you grumble to yourself in the dark the whole way home, you think to yourself, what is the point of this Daylight Saving Time ordeal? Since we just experienced “fall back,” Sunglasses Avant Garde is here to give you a little history behind the clock-changing madness.

The idea of Day Light Saving Time was first brought forward by Benjamin Franklin in an essay form called “An Economical Project.” Franklin wrote the essay while in Paris in 1784 and it wasn’t until over a century later that his idea was taken seriously.

In 1907, William Willett of London wrote a pamphlet called “Waste of Daylight” proposing to advance the clocks 20 minutes during each of the four Sundays in April and to retract the minutes during the four Sundays in September. Willett’s persistence led to a bill that was drafted and presented to Parliament in 1909. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until after Willett’s death that the bill was approved.

In 1916, Britain passed a daylight saving act that was put into play on May 21, 1916. Although there was some public confusion and concern about the process, the time change went as planned and the United States followed suit not long after.

During World War I, the U.S. government established Daylight Saving Time in order to save energy for war production. Up until 1966, individual states and communities could choose to take part of Daylight Savings Time at their own discretion. After Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, the majority of U.S. citizens no longer had a choice about changing their clocks.

Not long ago in 2007, Daylight Saving Time was extended by four weeks. This was based on the possibility of saving 10,000 barrels of oil per day due to the reduction of energy used by companies during daylight hours.

Believe it or not, there are a few U.S. territories that are exempt from this rule. Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa and the parts of Arizona do not follow the time change.

Myth: Lenses that are polarized block glares entirely.

No. Due to the technicalities of physical environment and the light that is emitted, not all glares are blocked from every angle. However, polarized lenses will decrease glare dramatically.

Myth: Since most polarized lenses are pricy, they must be worth getting.

Although polarized lenses are commonly higher in price, it does not mean they mean they will protect eyes from UV-A and UV-B rays.

Myth: Boaters will see through the water better with polarized lenses.

Yes, polarized lenses will help a boater see things more clearly. Just watch out for rocks! Polarized lenses have a darkening effect and sometimes rocks can be harder to see.

Myth: Wearing polarized lenses while looking at an LCD display will improve your view.

No, definitely not! Some images will even be invisible if one views an LCD screen display through polarized lenses.

Myth: The thicker your lenses are, the better the polarized view will be.

This is not true. Although polarized lenses come in different thickness, the filter is still the same.

Myth: Polarized lenses are an excellent choice for people who are sensitive to light.

Yes, absolutely. Polarized lenses will help people who suffer from photosensitivity.

Myth: Polarized glasses help one see better while driving.

This myth is true, but since our planet is constantly moving, polarized lenses will not block out all angles of the sun’s rays.

Myth: Snow skiers should wear polarized lenses on the slopes.

Polarized lenses will certainly help with the glare from the snow; however the darkening effect from a polarized lens can make it harder to see details.

Myth: People who wear bifocals cannot obtain polarized lenses.

This is true; however, there are other options. Just consult with your eye care professional.

All things must emerge from somewhere. Some things ideas spread like wildfire, while other concepts die out quick like a party on a Monday night. One invention that seems like it’s here to stay is sunglasses. Shades are mostly used to keep one’s eyes safe from the sun, while others use them for style or even to protect one’s identity. So just where did these spectacular, shaded spectacles transpire?

Long ago, in ancient times, polished gems as well as panes of smoky quartzes were used as eyewear. According to health.learninginfo.org, the Roman emperor Nero was delighted by viewing gladiator fights through polished gemstones. During the twelfth century, Chinese judges wore smoky quartz glasses in order to mask their facial expressions while questioning witnesses.

Shaded lenses did not have any further ado in the spotlight until around the eighteenth century when James Ayscough experimented with tints. Ayscough believed that green or blue tinted glasses could correct certain vision issues. It wasn’t until years later when sunglasses took a popular turn.

In 1929, Sam Foster introduced an eyewear design that protected eyes from the sun. Foster sold his sunglasses in Atlantic City, New Jersey along the beaches. Eventually his sunglasses were sold at an Atlantic City Woolworth.

When sunglasses became polarized by Edward H. Land in 1936, wearing them started to become a trend. Famous musicians and movie stars were seen sporting shades with their outfits. Not only were sunglasses a way to protect against the sun’s harmful rays, they became glamorous and stylish.

Since ancient times, sunglasses have certainly come a long way! Today, sunglasses can be seen almost everywhere. They are made for all different face shapes and sizes and consist of a wide variety of style and colors. Even the lens tints vary!

Can you imagine a world without sunglasses? I know I sure couldn’t!
